As the future of diesel cars in India is not very bright, customers are looking for alternative fuel options that can reduce their operating costs. Among other options, hybrid powertrains stand out as they offer both performance and mileage. However, when it comes to the most popular segment, i.e. between Rs 10 and Rs 15 lakh, very few models come with hybrid systems.
The Mercedes G580 equipped with EQ Technology can reach 62 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds.
There are some cost-effective options like mild hybrid systems on the lower trims of Maruti’s Fronx and Grand Vitara, but they are not as effective as the expensive, strong hybrid trims. Still, customers are exploring more hybrid options, as the number of such vehicles is set to increase to 2 per cent in 2023 compared to 0.5 per cent in 2022.
Hyundai shifts focus from electric to hybrid vehicles
Given the rise in popularity of hybrid cars in India, Hyundai Motor Group, the country’s second-largest carmaker, has decided to enter the segment within two years. According to a Reuters report, the company is planning to launch its first hybrid car by 2026, which will benefit its business in the subcontinent.
The company may launch a mid-size hybrid SUV like the Creta
Both Hyundai and Kia are evaluating hybrid sport-utility vehicles, which could be like the mid-size SUV Creta. Given that brands often update their existing models by updating them (with new features), there is a good chance that the two partners could convert their best-selling models, the Creta and Seltos, into hybrids.
Electric Range Rover surprises everyone by introducing cutting-edge traction control.
Yes, they will have to make some necessary changes, like installing a battery, power control unit, and regenerative braking system. This will make a significant difference in the overall price of the model. However, given the simplicity and comfort of the popular model, there is no reason why the company’s hybrid model should not be a success in India.
This is a major change in the strategy of the company, which was initially focusing on battery-based electric vehicles for the country. Although Hyundai and Kia are working on launching their Indian-made electric vehicles in the country by 2025, which should bring down the on-road price significantly, problems such as lack of charging stations and range anxiety have significantly impacted sales.
Still, Hyundai Motor Group’s hybrids are due to arrive in 2026 or 2027. The automaker already has this technology in other markets; it just has to adapt it to the driving conditions of the subcontinent.
