Brian McCardie, the Scottish actor who played the younger brother of Liam Neeson’s main protagonist in Michael Caton-Jones’ historical drama Rob Roy, has died. He was 59.
McCardie died “suddenly at home” on Sunday, his sister Sarah announced on X. “A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched the lives of many, and is gone too early,” she wrote.

Born on January 22, 1965, and raised near Glasgow, McCardie appeared in one of his earliest roles on the BBC soap opera EastEnders.
His sister, Sarah McCardie, shared the news in a post on her X account. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie (59), who was a beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to many. Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28 April.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days. As a family, we would ask for privacy at this time.

” Even though McCardie only appeared on “Line of Duty” a few times in the show’s first two seasons, his performance was memorable. “Line of Duty” creator Jed Mercurio and executive producer Simon Heath both said it was an “honour” for them to work with him. In a statement to the BBC they said: “Brian was an incredibly talented actor, and his lasting impact as Tommy Hunter is testament to the power of his performance.
“Off-screen, Brian could be very different from the character he played – he was warm, funny and charming. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.”

McCardy was recently shooting the Outlander prequel “Blood of My Blood.” His other films include “Time,” “Rob Roy,” “Filth,” “The Damned United” and “Murder Is Easy.”
In the U.S., he was seen in episodes of Shameless and Outlander, and had a role in the upcoming Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood.
McCardy received high marks for his emotional performance as Alasdair McGregor in Rob Roy (1995), which also starred Jessica Lange.
His film appearances also include playing Scottish soccer legend Dave Mackay, opposite Michael Sheen as Leeds United coach Brian Clough, and Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), 200 Cigarettes (1999), Low Winter Sun (2006), Filth (2013), Ghosts (2014), Caton-Jones’ Starring in Our Ladies (2019) and Damaged (2024).
