Apple iMessage gets all-new text effects that liven up conversations by enhancing any letter, word, phrase, or emoji with a dynamic, animated appearance. Users can better convey tone by adding formatting like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks expand to include any emoji or sticker, and now users can create a message and schedule it to send later.

When sending messages to contacts who don’t have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging than SMS and MMS.

Messages via Satellite is introduced in iOS 18 for when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via Satellite automatically prompts users to connect to their nearest satellite directly from the Messages app to send and receive text, emoji, and tapbacks on iMessage and SMS.3 With Dynamic Island, users always know when they’re connected to a satellite. Since iMessage was designed to protect user privacy, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

In a moment you missed it, Apple confirmed that RCS messaging support will officially arrive as part of iOS 18 in late autumn this year. The new standard will replace SMS as the default protocol when communicating between Android and iPhone devices, hopefully putting an end to the dreaded green bubble drama. In fact, Apple didn’t talk about it at all, just adding a reference to RCS support in a slide about iOS 18.

It’s no surprise that Apple hasn’t been making a song about this. Despite pressure from the EU and several other regulatory giants, it’s been dragging its feet in adopting RCS. Late last year, it finally relented, admitting that it would eventually adopt RCS, but giving us minimal information about the details.

It was largely expected that Apple would reveal RCS details here, but Apple events are usually more about cheers, not derision. Frankly, Apple doesn’t want to reveal what seems like a concession, so they opted for a slide mention. It’s no surprise that Apple isn’t making a song about this. Everything we know about RCS support on Apple comes to us via a Google business development manager. Apple will use RCS Universal Profile 2.4. This is important because it’s different from the standard used in Google Messages, which adds some extra features like end-to-end encryption.

Galaxy Ring: The features of the Samsung Galaxy Ring and its release date.

The good news is that the universal standard should still be a notable upgrade. Right now Android and iPhone users can only communicate together via SMS texting, and so image and video quality is either very low or sometimes not included at all. While we’d like to see Apple and Google work together to ensure the best possible support for RCS, we’re not too surprised to hear that Apple is trying its best to approach RCS from a different perspective. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about Apple’s plans for RCS on iOS 18.
