So Apple’s ‘Letting Loose’ ended just a few hours ago, and we now have full details on the new iPad Air, iPad Pro, new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. One notable detail that has surprised everyone is Apple’s decision to remove chargers from the boxes of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models in the EU and UK.
This isn’t the first time Apple has removed chargers or adapters from its boxes. The iPhone 12 was the first Apple product to ship without a charger in the box. Apple claims the move is aimed at “saving” the environment.
What does this mean for the average consumer? This change means EU and UK customers will now only get the iPad Pro or iPad Air and a USB-C charging cable in the box, without a charger.

Protect the environment?
While Apple claims its reasoning behind this move is to reduce e-waste and help protect the environment, you could argue that this decision doesn’t necessarily achieve its goal. Most iPad users are students who don’t have an iPhone or an extra adapter, so they will buy a charger separately. The one goal this would actually achieve is increasing Apple’s profits.

Including a charger with the iPad is a better option for the environment and consumers (not Apple) because buyers can also use that charger to charge their iPhone and other devices, reducing the need for additional chargers.
Plus, removing the charger from the box means that EU and UK customers who buy a new iPad will now have to buy a separate charger, which will require additional packaging and shipping, potentially nullifying any environmental benefits gained from removing the charger from the box.
Apple isn’t alone…
In Apple’s defense, it’s not the only company that has removed chargers from its products. After removing chargers on the iPhone 12, Samsung quickly removed them from its smartphones and tablets. It doesn’t matter if you’re from the EU, UK, US, or any other country in the world; you won’t get a charger with a Samsung tablet.
Finally, Apple’s move has sparked debate among consumers and environmental advocates. Some applaud the company’s efforts to reduce e-waste. Conversely, others question the practicality and environmental impact of this decision, and the latter are in the majority.
