Alphabet’s autonomous-driving technology company will source the robotaxis, which is co-designed with Geely-owned Zeeker. The vehicle, which is still in its development phase, is currently known as the M-Vision and is designed for the sole purpose of ride-sharing. It is based on Geely’s SEA-M platform, a modified version of the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) used by various Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and smart vehicles.

USA Tariffs on electric vehicles

President Biden will impose 102.5% tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China and given that Ziker only makes vehicles in China, Waymo Robotaxi could be affected by these tariffs.

Speaking to Auto News recently, a Waymo spokesperson said the first is to “closely monitor the China tariff situation.”

Waymo has begun receiving a small number of Zeeker robotaxis in the US and is testing them in San Francisco. It’s unclear how many Zikr robotaxis Waymo is purchasing, but regardless of the number, the US government’s latest move will impact Waymo’s bottom line.

Will the tariffs force the company to reconsider its Zeeker deal or perhaps encourage Zeeker to build the robotaxi in a “US-friendly” country like Mexico and then import it to the States?

Technical specifications about the robotaxi are not known, but it is believed to use an 800-volt electrical architecture and may borrow its electric motors from the 007 sedan.

The M-Vision concept showcased by Zecher had minivan-like sliding front and rear doors to improve passenger ingress and egress. It has a spacious interior and a completely flat floor, making it ideal for taxi services.
