iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera Specs Leak: Variable Aperture Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

iPhone 18 Pro

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max may not feature a complete camera redesign, but a newly leaked report suggests it could introduce one of the most significant camera upgrades in recent years—a variable aperture system.

According to a leaked diagnostics log, reportedly sourced from internal Tata Electronics files and shared by NotebookCheck, Apple is preparing to upgrade the primary camera while keeping the rest of the camera hardware largely unchanged. The iPhone 18 series is expected to debut in September 2026.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Could Get a New Main Camera

The leak claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature Sony’s new IMX905 image sensor as its main camera, replacing the IMX903 sensor used in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Although both sensors reportedly have the same 1.22μm pixel size, the new camera is said to support a variable aperture mechanism. The leaked diagnostics log reportedly includes calibration data for the aperture system, suggesting Apple has developed hardware that can physically adjust the amount of light entering the camera.

If accurate, this would mark the first iPhone to feature a variable aperture camera.

Why Variable Aperture Is Important

Unlike traditional smartphone cameras with a fixed aperture, a variable aperture system can automatically adjust the lens opening based on lighting conditions.

A wider aperture allows more light to reach the sensor, helping improve low-light photography, while a narrower aperture can produce sharper images and a more natural depth-of-field in brighter environments.

Although several Android smartphone makers, including Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor, have already introduced variable aperture technology, this would be Apple’s first implementation. Combined with Apple’s computational photography, the feature could deliver better image quality without requiring users to manually adjust camera settings.

Other Cameras May Remain Unchanged

While the main camera is expected to receive an upgrade, the remaining camera hardware is reportedly staying the same.

According to the leak, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain:

  • Telephoto Camera: Sony IMX973 sensor
  • Ultra-Wide Camera: Unchanged
  • LiDAR Scanner: Unchanged
  • Front Camera: Unchanged

This suggests Apple is focusing its camera improvements mainly on the primary sensor rather than redesigning the entire camera system.

Price Could Increase

Previous reports have also suggested Apple may raise the price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max by around $200, mainly due to higher camera component and memory costs. However, other rumors indicate the price increase could be smaller.

Apple has not officially confirmed any pricing details.

Final Thoughts

If these rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could become a compelling upgrade for photography enthusiasts thanks to its new variable aperture camera. While the overall camera setup may look familiar, the upgraded main sensor could offer noticeable improvements in low-light photography, depth control, and overall image quality.

As with all pre-release leaks, these details should be treated with caution until Apple officially unveils the iPhone 18 lineup, which is expected to happen in September 2026.
