Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) Group has announced that the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will be assembled in India, marking the first time that a Range Rover has been produced outside the UK. These models will be available exclusively for the Indian market, promising low waiting times for the growing Range Rover customer base in the country.

The pair of flagship SUVs were previously produced exclusively at the Solihull plant in the UK, which the company proudly designates as the “global home of Range Rover”. Going forward, some trims will also be assembled from knock-down kits in Pune, India.

The Pune plant, located near the capital Mumbai, is owned by JLR’s parent company Tata Motors. Since 2011, it has served as the production base for ten other JLR products designed for the Indian market, starting with the Land Rover Freelander. Currently, it manufactures the Range Rover Evoque and Velar, Jaguar F-Pace and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

JLR Chief Commercial Officer Lennard Hornik commented, “India has experienced steady and remarkable economic growth over the past few years, and this trajectory is expected to continue in the near future.”

The Range Rover produced in India is offered in two trims: Autobiography, featuring a 3.0-litre gasoline powertrain that produces 393 hp (293 kW/398 PS), and HSE, equipped with a 3.0-litre diesel engine that produces 346 hp (293 kW/398 PS). HP (258 PS) kW/351 PS). Both models come in long-wheelbase body styles, with the Autobiography priced from ₹260 lakh ($312,981) and the HSE priced from ₹236 lakh ($284,090).

The locally produced Range Rover Sport is also available with the same powertrain, but in Dynamic SE trim. Both versions are priced at ₹140 lakh ($168,551), offering considerable cost savings compared to the larger and more luxurious Range Rover LWB.

First Indian-made Range Rover

The first Indian-made units of both the models will be showcased at the new Range Rover House India located in the coastal city of Alibaug. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from May 24 for the Range Rover and from August 16 for the Range Rover Sport. According to Geraldine Ingham, managing director of Range Rover, the brand’s sales in India are set to grow by 160 percent in 2024, indicating promising prospects for the future.
