The Idea of You, which is based on the critically acclaimed modern love story of the same name, follows 40-year-old single mother Solène (Anne Hathaway) as she embarks on an impromptu romance with 24-year-old August Moon lead singer Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine).

The Idea of You is directed by Michael Showalter. Douglas S. Jones, Jason Babiszewski, Jennifer Westfeldt, and Kiyan Gass are executive producers. The film is produced by Cathy Schulman, Gabrielle Union, Hathaway, Robinne Lee, Eric Hayes, Showalter, and Jordana Mollick.
Hayes Campbell, the 24-year-old boyfriend played by Nicholas Galitzine in The Idea of You, is not Harry Styles. But he’s not Harry Styles either. He’s British, has tattoos, likes oversized cardigans — and he’s a member of a boy band he wants to quit.
The former One Direction member is an inspiration writer Robinne Lee cited for the novel on which the film is based, and while The Idea of You is not Harry Styles fan fiction (an emerging subgenre), Hayes retains the hazy outlines of a projection. He’s not a full character, not like 40-year-old Silver Lake gallery owner Solenn Marchand (Anne Hathaway), whom he meets during a meet-and-greet with her teenage daughter at Coachella, which turns into a hectic affair.
As the title suggests, she’s an idea – an attractive young pop star who enjoys the benefits of being part of a commercial phenomenon while also living above it, more sensitive, more talented, and more inclined not only to appreciate the charms of an older woman but to fall in love with her.
The Idea of You is a fantasy, but not the one you might expect upon reading the film’s logline. This film, directed uninspiredly by Michael Showalter, is less erotic than demographical, more a dream of being able to participate in a cultural offering that is no longer for you.
Solenn is recently divorced from finance asshole Dan (Reid Scott) and is trying not to show bitterness about him leaving her for a younger colleague. She can’t be a fan of Hayes’ band, August Moon. That would be humiliating, as evidenced by her encounter with a middle-aged moonhead holding a poster in the film’s VIP lounge.
August Moon is a manufactured product, five cute boys with different personalities assembled, as Hayes tells her from the head shots on the wall. Solenn’s 17-year-old daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), has already outgrown his music, which is the kind of teenage longing she craves. But her relationship with Hayes, which began when she accidentally walked into his trailer thinking it was the bathroom, offers her a way to enjoy his shows without shame.
Even though the film would have us believe that Hayes isn’t just a teenager, it shows him playing guitar in service of his compositions, enjoying the experience of standing on the edge of the stage in front of an arena full of screaming teenagers, being sung by someone who makes it clear that the pop song he’s singing is for you.
The offering is more charming than it sounds. Solenn’s life is charming, with her Silver Lake Craftsman, list of good friends, and lucrative business, but it’s also very adult. A montage of Solenn being flirted with by strange or not really different men at her birthday party previews what dating as a 40-something will be like. Meanwhile, Hayes is there with his straightforward musical pleas for love and his nomadic existence of flying on a private plane and hopping around European cities between shows — a life free of the burdens of adulthood.
The first time he and Solenn are together, it’s in a hotel room high above Manhattan, a perfect non-place where they can fall into each other’s arms and then order room service afterward. It’s a sexy scene, though every other erotic encounter is turned into a montage that prioritizes the picture of them sprawled across luxury sheets more than actual hooking up. With Izzi in camp and Solenn’s gallery vacant due to Hayes’ purchases, he persuades an initially reluctant Solenn to come on tour with him, an interlude presented as a frenzied cycle of sightseeing and loitering in various rented rooms—a vacation resembling romance.
Galitzine, who comes from the very silly Red, White and Royal Blue, never manages to exude the charisma of a successful performance artist. This doesn’t hurt the film too much, because it’s very much about Solenn, and as Solenn, Hathaway gives a particularly lovely and sensitive performance. She shines as a woman who connects with big, fiery emotions, and reminds herself that these feelings aren’t just limited to youth. At 41, Hathaway doesn’t look older than her 29-year-old co-star, which underscores the excitement that comes with the age difference between lovers.
The actors themselves may not be brimming with effortless chemistry, but the film still manages to be erotic, thanks to the spectacle of Solenn feeling desirable. When she shows up in New York in high heels and a trench coat, which she then takes off to reveal a transparent dress, it’s like watching someone who’s just stepped into the spotlight.
The Idea of You could have been a little more generous – it allows the real world to creep into its unexpected relationship almost before it even begins – but it’s surprisingly seductive despite its restraint. Anyone can sing along to a One Direction song in the privacy of their own home, but reconnecting with the emotions expressed by one of those big choruses is something else altogether.
